I still remember my secondary school physics lessons on light and its optical properties. They taught us about reflections, refraction, mirrors and lenses. Little did I know that these physics principles would become very relevant to me one day.
You can't have photographs or moving pictures (films) without lenses. Lenses are a very important part of the camera. Simply put, lenses, in cameras, direct light from an environment to the camera sensor for image capture. Lenses also influence the look of the image, the field of view captured and the depth of field.
There are many types of lenses used in the film industry from zoom lenses (variable focal length) to primes lenses (single focal length) and circular and anamorphic lenses. The prices of lenses could range from hundred of dollars to hundreds of thousand dollars.
There are many considerations in selecting a lens for a film project. Every lens has a unique character and one needs a proper understanding of lenses and how they influence image capture to determine the best lens to bring one's creative intent to life.
At Paitan Media, we've been experimenting with different types of lenses at different price points to build a database of options to provide the best visual aesthetic for our projects. For our upcoming short film, "The Revelation" we have selected the Voigtlander Nokton lenses. Yes, it's a photography lens. However, it has the unique optical quality at right price point for this project.. I'll share more on this in my next blog.
