I confess, I almost went with SQUID GAME for the title of this blog, after all the squid was shaded and rendered in a game engine.
This is the continuation of my Engineering Art project. I created a squid procedurally in Houdini (with the support of a tutorial "Howdini" by Tim van Helsdingen on Youtube) . I used procedural noise to animate the mesh and then exported the alembic to Unreal Engine 5 (UE5). In UE5 I created materials/shaders driven by vertex properties of the ,mesh to complete the model. Then I included the squid in a free environment available on the Unreal Market place and rendered my short clip as an EXR file. To finalise my clip I imported it into Davinci Resolve color graded it.
Sounds simple right? So why did I find myself pulling out my hair several times when things went wrong? Indeed things would always go wrong especially when you are learning how to do new things. The best learnings happen when you get stuck and you have to figure out a solution.
I really enjoyed this week's task on shading and rendering. It showed me I have just dipped my toe into an ocean of learning. However I'm not daunted by the journey ahead. In fact I relish the opportunity to master new skills.
